i don´t understand the problem.

when you make the change (to 3590 mode) then the 9840tape units can read the
tapes which are wrote in 3490 mode !
DFSHM can use the 9840 in 3590 mode, and i think db2 too.

you must only see that you not write again at the "old" tapes (by tsm set it
to read-only). 
you must then move the data from the "old 3490-tapes" to scratch tapes with
the 3590 io-mode.

Hi Helge,
No I meant 3480 to 3490, because I was mentioning a previous migration.
The new migration would be from 3490 emulation to 3590 emulation.
However after some more research I find I cannot do the migration
I think your 9840 drives must be exclusive TSM use.
Mine are shared between TSM, DFHSM and DB2, cannot be exclusive
Discussion with  STK says that the drives that you want to run as 3590 image
need
1) Microcode change (3590 image or 3490, not both)
2) Unitattr parm change on the HSC software
3) Change in the OS390 IODEF to 3590 device.
