I'm chuckling a bit to myself, thinking of the old joke of how you discern
a software person: That person will indefinitely look at command display
indications in pondering the condition of a device. There are times when
you need to just go look at the darned drive and see what its panel says
about its condition. Never overlook the obvious: I can't tell you how
many times in my career I've seen quite intelligent people obsess over
erudite factors because they could be more intriguing than reality. Time
is a limited resource. Start by looking in the areas which will most
likely yield the most immediate results, and dig into laborious detail
only as it becomes necessary.
