1. Library Sharing is pretty descriptive - it is required if *the TSM
server* will share the library. As already answered if 3494 is partitioned
and different servers use different cartridge categories it is not
required. If TSM server will share the library, either with another server
or with storage agents, it *is* required. Because you have defined storage
agents (they actually get defined as "servers") you see "Is Library
Sharing in use: Yes".
2. Managed Library is depending on the size of the library for both # of
drives and # of storage slots. In the past the rule was: it is required if
library has more than 2 drives or more than *certain* number of slots
(different for each library but usually 20/30, that's why sometimes "Number of
Managed Libraries in use" was incorrect). In version 5.1 the
rule was changed (increased) and for *all* became: it is not required for
any library with 3 or less drives and 40 or less slots, it is requred for
more than 3 drives and/or more than 40 slots.
3. Other historic results - "Library Sharing" and "Managed Library" were
two different licenses for different things. In the past a customer was
able to have one, the other or both. In version 5.1 they were joined
within single ITSM Enterprise Edition together with HSM and Storage Agent
licenses. Later (in August 2002) new ITSM eXtended Edition was "invented",
HSM became ITSM for Space Management, Storage Agents became ITSM for SANs
and ITSM XE kept Managed Library and server Library Sharing features. Even
upgrade from TSM 4.2 having only one of the features to ITSM 5.1 entitles
for Base Edition and only if you have both upgrade is to eXtended Edition.
Now back to the initial questions:
- If your 3494 is having 40 or less cells you do not need Managed
Library feature for v4.2 or Enterprise/eXtended Edition of v5.1. If you
have more (and I thing you have) you *need* the license even if the server
does not report correctly the requirement.
- Shared Library in v4.2 covers number of servers sharing
library(ies). Both Library Manager and Library Client servers require
license. For storage agents only the *server* requires the license to
share the library, the storage agent's license includes license to act as
library client. So if you had 7 servers you needed 7 licenses. If you have
one server and 7 storage agents you needed only one library sharing
license and seven storage agent licenses !!! Demand from the salesperson
sold the licenses if you are in latter case.

Subject: Re: License for Managed Library?
Hi
Depending on the version of TSM you are running, you dont have to buy the
shared library license:
1. Tivoli Storage Manager required library sharing, and managed library
license, if the license has more than 3 drives, or more than 30 slots.
2. Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition doesnt require either shared
library or managed library licenses, as they are included within the TSM
Extended license.
Of couse, the situation differs between running multiple TSM servers
against a 3494, and running LAN-free agents against the 3494, as the
LAN-free agents utilize both server-to-server communication, and library
sharing. In that case, you will require
