I have done it a couple of times without causing any problems.....  I
followed the manual.

It is absolutely safe, as long as you follow the instructions in the TDP for
Exchange manual. I've done it (or seen it done) a dozen times. Your Exchange
administrator needs to read the MS docs on this process; it's well
documented.
