on TSM 4.2 & 5.1
if you use dsmcutil from CLI:
Edit the tsmjbbd.ini file to identify the file spaces (drives) which are to
be journaled.
To install journal service: dsmcutil install journal
To start journal service: net start "TSM Journal Service" or dsmcutil start
/name:"TSM Journal Service"
if you use the setup wizard it will update the tsmjbbd.ini file based on
user input and then install and start the journal service.
just use the Utilities->setup wizard menu and the last line is about
setting up JBB.
you can find this easily explained in the SG24-6277-00 redbook.
the journaled based backup is only available on Win2k and NT clients.

Very easily! The problem is not that you are only backing up 12,222 files,
but unless you are using the Journaling service, TSM has to look at each
one of those 4,000,000+ files to see if it needs to back it up or not. The
10 hours is being spent doing this. We have many clients in this
situation, when we implement the Journaling service, we take this 10 - 12
hour back ups and make them 5 - 10 minutes! I would be concerned with
losing connection though, it could just be that the client is taking so
long to process at its end that it will not talk to the TSM server often
enough. I would try out Journaling and see how that helps.

Does anyone think a computer that has this many files on it, that only
backed up 12,222 files, should take over 10 hours to complete? I'm having a
problem with this node dropping out a couple of times a night for being
idle
for more than 60 minutes too.
We've double checked the NIC and switch port for the proper settings. When
I
looked at it last night the CPU wasn't doing anything.
