Backup functionality is nearly independent from archive functionality (at
least in TSM terms)
- backups are created to be able to restore the last known state, i.e. the
state last backup is run. Example - a Windows server with all files and
applications on it plus their old copies according to backup policy.
- archives are used when you have to keep a copy of the data in some state
for predefined period of time. Example - same server with all reports
submitted till 31 March. Reports submitted in April will not be in 31.03
archive (unless someone invents a time machine :-) and could be found in
30.04 archive only if not overwritten.
In short you can make backups without archives, archives without backups
or both.
