Yes, you can create a backupset and delete the filespace, although I have
never tried to delete the whole node, just the file space. And although it's
not really recommended you can retrieve individual files from a backupset
tape from command line only, no support in GUI. We currently have an open
PMR tied to a critsit that deals with an individual file restore from a
backupset that took 92 hours for a 220kb file, so beware. I have had success
testing this on another TSM server with "normal restore times", and we have
had success on moving a backupset from one TSM server to another. Just try
to test everything before putting all of your files on backupsets for long
term off site storage.

Other notes about backupsets.

Managing backupsets is all manual, although there are some after market
tools that can help with this. I haven't personally tried any.

Once the backupset is created, you have to manually checkout the volume,
there is nothing automated in TSM or DRM to tell you to take the tape out of
the library.

If you want to keep the backupset for lets say 2557 days or seven years,
your backupset will expire but you not have any indication of the expiration
and you will have to manually delete that volume to reuse that tape. Hint:
in deleting the volume, remember to use CAPS in the volume name (see past
discussions on this in the list).

Also, these tapes do not contain content headers, so although all files are
on the tape that is no contents list. You can query contents, but this query
is not saved to future reference on the tape.

Also, one filespace per volume.

I am no expert on backupsets, some of this information may not pertain to
your particular version of TSM. I am only sharing my experiences to possibly
help you and others in dealing with TSM.

Test, Test, Test....

Subject: Creating a backupset?

Hello,

Will the creation of a backup set enable me to take the backupset tapes
out of the library and delete the filespace and node from the database? The
original active files should stay on the backupset tapes and allow me to
take the tapes offsite correct? If not do you have any suggestions of how
to do this the proper way?

Thank You,
