I can answer a few questions of yours.

First of all I would recommend you to read this Redbook. "Tivoli Storage
Manager Concepts".

for your questions.

1)  I think the dsmsched.log has been set to overwrite itself? - I would
like it to append the data and then set the retention to keep 2 weeks worth
of data - how do I do this?  That's done in the dsm.sys - right?

Yes this is done in dsm.sys file. on HP-UX,AIX,SUN,LINUX .

The line is

SCHEDLOGRETENTION 14,D
ERRORLOGRETENTION 14,D


This line is in dsm.opt in windows


2)    I'm seeing this message inplace of a "backup completed sucessfully"
message a lot of times, but not all the time...anyone have any ideas why -
or how I can get rid of it?

I'm not sure what your problem is here? you need to explain better.

3)  I have a couple of backups that appear to complete just fine (no failed
files), however when I do a 'q event' it shows the schedule as "FAILED" - I
can't figure out if I have a good backup or not?  Any ideas?

This is sometimes due to client errors. I would recommend reinstalling your
client and installing the latest fixes in the client. you can get them here.

4)  Anyone know what this message means?  Anything I need to worry about?  I
ask because it only seems to appear when #3 happens.


This is nothing to worry about, this tells you only that the tape has been
idle for 3min in your drive, and your server settings is configured to
dismount all volumes that have been idle for 3 minutes. If this is the cause
of your errors in 3 then there is some other message before this one that
tells you more.
