I decide this based on what's convenient to manage.  I've got a raid of 18GB
SSA disks with 40-some 5GB volumes written on it, because that was where it
seemed the break-even was, between flexible sizing (preferring small volumes)
and simple management, preferring large ones.

With a decent disk controller, I think the performance isn't affected too
much.
