Can you clarify the mode you are running in?

With our 3583 if I look at the Library Error Log (via RMU) it shows:
"Auto Clean:            DISABLED"

I was told by IBM that this is hardware autocleaning which we don't want to
use (I don't think is is supported on the 3583).

Is this the mode you are running?

How do you know that the drives are being cleaned?  Is the bug a TSM bug or
library bug?
