I'm in the process of checking out a 3584 library with 10 Ultrium LTO drives
under TSM 3.7.4 and not having any problems.

You need to have both the current IBM SCSI drivers *and* the current IBM
Atape device drivers.

What do you get when you do an lsdev -Cc tape? Mine looks like this:

vistula:-:/home/s01_0125 > lsdev -Cc tape
smc0 Available 10-78-00-0,1 IBM 3584 Library Medium Changer
rmt0 Available 10-78-00-0,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive
rmt1 Available 10-78-00-1,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive
rmt2 Available 10-79-00-2,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive
rmt3 Available 10-79-00-3,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive

If you're seeing 'Generic SCSI Tape' here, you've got a backlevel Atape
device driver.
