Oh, Rick, you have to know everything!!  :-)
The place to go for insights is the device drivers programming manual,
found on the FTP site, in the devdrvr directory.
Mounts occur via a Device Number, and there is an MTDEVICE ioctl
request type to obtain that number via the tape file descriptor.
