A couple of things to look for...

1. Reading your post, it occurs to me that the system software that
supports the NAS structure might be stepping on the backup process.
Novell is infamous for not informing third-party developers of system
call changes, and that could explain why you can't backup a remote NAS
volumes.

Try installing the Netware client on the box (don't forget the latest
TSA and SMDR modules--*NOT* the ones on the Novell ftp site).
