Regarding backing up with the b/a client-- the Redbook recommends
excluding the Notes data files (*.nsf) I believe, and doesn't address
Domino being up or down, or "inconsistency". Isn't it overkill to include
these files, anyway? Since the API backups are at the database level--
you are getting a "whole" backup of the database when you run an domdsmc
incr or domdsmc sel-- i.e., you can only restore the entire database as it
existed at the time of the backup (if you are using logging, you can apply
changes, but it still deals with the entire database, no "documents").

If you did a restore of a 4.6 database, you would still have to convert it
to the 5.0, and you wouldn't be able to apply changes, would you?

Wouldn't you have to restore the 4.6, and copy whatever documents
interested you into the 5.0 database? Since the new version doesn't allow
universal access to local databases, like it did in 4.6, wouldn't you have
to either "be" the user, or be a notes admin?

And, one more question :-) I am trying to figure out how to set the mgmt
class parameters. Under the old API, the management class was keep 10
versions of existing, 4 versions of deleted, keep extra version 400 days
and keep only 400 days (I didn't set this up.) People (and HR) got real
used to being able to go back to when we came off of OfficeVision on VM
and first went to Notes. With the way the new API works, being able to
provide this kind of retention is gonna require beaucoup storage, and
besides, the pervasive legal stance is-- you don't want to keep that stuff
forever, it'll be used against you.

What are most companies setting their retention values for for Domino
databases? Or is this issue dealt with by utilizing the soft delete
abilities of Domino?

thanks!!

Jack,

TDP for Lotus Notes and TDP for Lotus Domino
are not compatible with each other.
With Lotus Domino Server R5, Lotus provided an API
solely for the purposes of backup and restore.
It is done at the database level.
Domino R4 did not have this...and so the technique
for backing up and restoring on Domino R4 was very different.
It was done at the item level.

It is possible that you could get TDP for Lotus Notes
to restore data to a Domino R5 server but be aware that
it is not supported (translation: it may work but if
it doesn't, IBM support won't take APARs.)

I would suggest backing up your R5 servers with TDP for
Lotus Domino and keep an R4 server around in the event
that you need, for some reason, to go back to a
TDP for Lotus Notes (R4) backup.

(Side comment: Backing up your Lotus databases with the
TSM base client is fine... be aware, however, that if you
do this while your Domino server is running, it is possible
to get "inconsistent" backups.)

Thanks,

Del
