You can't set the mode of a scratch tape to Destroyed because it's not in a
(primary) storage pool.  I would first check the AIX Error Log for further
information about the error event.  I would also Checkout and eject the tape
cartridge from the library and inspect it: assure that its Write Protect
wheel is not in the read-only position, and check the leader block to assure
that it's not jammed.  If the tape looks okay, reinsert it into the library
and use mtlib and tapeutil to exercise it, being by the 3494 to be able to
see if the drive is having loading problems with it.  If the tape seems okay
and passes read-write tests, you might do a Label Libvolume to both see if
TSM can write to it, and check it in.

In any case, TSM should be smarter than to repeatedly try using a tape that
suffered an I/O error.  A later server level may do better.
