From my ADSM functional directory (http://people.bu.edu/rbs):

Pending                                 Typical status of a tape in a 'Query
                                        Volume' report (not 'Query LIBVolume'),
                                        reflecting a sequential access volume
                                        which has been purged of all data, but
                                        which is awaiting for the STGpool
                                        REUsedelay number of days to elapse
                                        before it can be re-used.
                                        Offsite volumes would have a REUsedelay
                                        value at least as long as the oldest
                                        database backup to be kept, to
                                        guarantee the recovery of expired files.
                                        Pending volumes are processed every
                                        hour, beginning 60 minutes after the
                                        server is started.
                                        To return a volume to the Scratch pool
                                        before the REUsedelay expires, just do
                                        'DELete Volume ______'.  (Note that
                                        'UPDate Volume' won't do it.)
