I've done it both ways without any problem.  I liked the simple upgrade
process better because it was quicker.

Have the db backup in case and you should be ok.

I'd do the restore bit if I wanted to make large changes to the way I had my
db and log volumes.  But maybe not even then.

Comments apply to TSM on NT and Solaris.  I haven't done any others.
