You might want to check your block size on the tape drive.  I have found
that if you leave it at 1024 (default) backups are exceptionally slow.  Try
changing it to variable, 0, and see if that helps.  Have you actually tested
Legato on this machine on this drive?  If not you may want to.  If you are
backing up millions of 4 byte files it will take much longer than backup up
4 1million byte files.  Keep that in mind.  Also make sure that you are not
retrying files.  That will slow you down considerably.

To change the block size enter

chdev -l /dev/rmt# -a block_size=0
