We have two native 3590 drives in a 3494 tape library, and three more 3590
drives providing the physical storage for a Virtual Tape Server. We have about
300 native 3590 volumes. So far we have retired four of them after seeing two
or more write errors. When a write error occured ADSM unloaded the tape
involved and continued writing on another tape. Whenever this happened, I did
a 'move data' command to move the data written before the error to another
tape. I never saw any read errors during these 'move data' commands.

I know we have had some write errors on the tapes used with the Virtual Tape
Server, but I don't know how many. We have always been able to recover the
data written before the write error.

The 3494 automatically cleans tape drives at intervals based on usage
statistics, and automatically ejects cleaning cartridges when they reach their
maximum number of uses. Unfortunately, our operations staff sometimes fails to
maintain an adequate inventory of cleaning cartridges. They deal with this
problem by reinserting cleaning cartridges that were ejected because they had
reached their maximum number of uses. I suspect that we would have less
trouble with write errors if the cleaning cartridges were managed properly.
