Eric,
You are entirely right - if server1 is doing a backup and server2 IPLs
then you will most likely have a loss of data. The reason for this is
because server2 (whatever type of open systems) will perform a SCSI
bus reset upon booting while probing the devices on his SCSI bus (this
is a good thing because you want servers to come up and automatically
detect their SCSI devices) but it is a bad thing when you have more
than one SCSI initiator on the same SCSI bus.
Thankfully switched fabric SANs will help us get around this by
implementing full point-to-point connections between devices and
eliminating the old shared-bus methodology.
