Hi John -

Ahhhhhhhh! The joys of defending *TSM.

Truely, *TSM is one of the best enterprise solutions for backup and
recovery. It may very well be that your problems are not with the product
but rather with the platform and configuration. ADSM on the mainframe...
Hmmmmm... well we have talked ourselves out of it for the most part. Unless
you can dedicate enough of the mainframe cycles to *TSM you will have
problems. We have found that AIX works best for us as a platform. what we
are missing from your discussion is the tape technology you are working
with.

We have also had many discussions internally regarding the restore times
because of the time to mount and access data. Our concerns were validated
recently with the help of Kelly Lipp of SSSI and there is now some movement
internally to get a tape technology that can keep up with *TSM.

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
The second step is to isolate the product from the platform and the tape
technology and find the technology that meets the requirement.

final thought...
If you go to Arcserve, good luck there!, or legato and such you will have to
change the backup platform. If you are ready to do that anyway why not port
*SM to the new platform and see how it goes before investing in a new
product. Again, what is the tape storage media?

You may not have to throw the baby out with the bath water.

good Luck

CR
