Nick,

the theory says:

BACKUP only save the 'symbolic link' whereas ARCHIVE save the file
pointed by the link (under the symbolic link path), SUBDIR affects the
first level of the directory (while ARCHIVING) or the complete subtree.

So, in your case it works fine for the backup.
