David - Using a 56Kb modem never guarantees getting 56Kb.  I have
        one at home and can barely get 33Kb because of phone line
quality problems.  Your communications software should tell you
what you are actually getting.  Do some raw testing with native
file transfers, without ADSM.  And the 4KB/s may reflect ADSM
client processing overhead, with delays before transmission.
You could try client compression to see if that helps, though
some modems do better compressing the data themselves.
There may also be some adjustments you could make in the laptop's
operating system communication parameters.
