The obvious that comes to mind here --

Set up the archive class for the 6 month or one year retention, and use a
different initSID.utl file with this archive class. Don't forget to archive
/usr/sap/SID, /sapmnt/SID, and /oracle/SID with the same archive class. This
will have to be done as an off-line backup (or you'll need to do some funky
things with redo log archive retention. . .)
