Its almost certainly the network....
Make sure that the network card on the client being backed up, the network
port it is attached to, the network port the ADSM server is attached to, and
the ADSM server network card (all 4 points AND any other links in the
network route) they must all be set to 100 (if you are on that speed), and
be set with Full Duplex.
Any auto-sensing will cause problems.
