Wrong! Sun bought a small spin-off from Cray who were developing what Sun
then redeveloped as the E10000. Otherwise Sun has always designed its own
(non-switched, non-Gigaplane) hardware such as SPARC CPUs, Sbus, Mbus, etc.

Rodrigo's previous comment about Solaris not being the best version of
Unix, well it really depends on what you are used to and what your biasses
are. I have managed over a dozen different varieties of Unix and I would
rate Solaris as overall one of the best. Certainly much less eccentric
than AIX, HP-UX or whatever Compaq calls its Alpha OS now.

Solaris has some weaknesses. Disaster recovery is better on AIX; Solaris
does not yet supply a journalled filesystem by default (JFS or Vxfs); the
Solaris printing system is crap; the default disk management software
(Disksuite) has some performance issues (especially RAID 5); and Sun's
insistance on using NIS+ for everything is annoying.

Overall, I rate Solaris at about 7.5 out of 10. (I rate AIX at about 6.0
and HP/UX at about 6.5.)

Talking about architecture (Gigaplane and stuff). Not about CPUs.
