Yes, it was SQL 7.0 and yes, I did use /TRUNCAFTER on the full backup.
I think I now understand what's happened. Are you saying that:
1) The /TRUNCAFTER option should not be used with full backups if
transaction log backups are also being performed;
2) Following a full backup by an immediate transaction log backup will
achieve the desired truncation of the transaction log;
