     Neil,

     if you're going to push your tape units hard and fast then listen to
     Josh go for the 3494/3590 (true, there is a cost penalty).
     As for the DLT's I.m quit charmed with the STK technology but I'm hard
     pressed to advise DLT for the large to very large environments.
     As for DLT (especially in the ADSM NT environment) it is very
     difficult if not impossible to push them to there peak performance and
     thus tend to be perceived as slooow (and always slow in loading,
     irrespective of ATL).
     We are also looking into  AIT technology, in an ADIC 1000, to replace
     some of our DLT ATL libraries, but if we had the budget, definitely
     3494/3590).

Neil,

If cost is not an issue, go with the IBM 3494 with 3590 E-series tape
drives.  You will benefit from both stellar performance and excellent
reliability from this unit.
