Yep... you're not the only one I've heard interpret the doc. that way;
think if it another way (without all the extra words around it):
ARCHSYMLinkasfile = YES means store the actual file/directory;
ARCHSYMLinkasfile = NO means store the symbolic link only.
My customer has wanted this capability since v1, and they're absolutely
delighted with the new option.
