Darth Vader,
You might also want to have an engineer check the read/write heads on your
3590. We had defective heads on a couple of our drives which caused a
cleaning request to be generated after each tape dismount.

Mr. Vader,
Tivoli has a messages manual out for v3.1. Check out their web page:

Don't worry excessively with this one... just do a "move data"
and let
the tape roll scratch again.
Now to answer your questions... VCR data is an additional way
the data
is tracked on the tapes. Remember with old tapes if you had
100 files
on the tape and you lost file 2, then the only file you had
left was
file 1... 2-100 were gone! Not anymore. AND just because the
VCR
data is bad doesn't mean the "data" is bad (but could be).
Every time
the tape is rewritten new VCR data is laid down, thus do a move
data
and the problem will be self fixing. Now access will be slower
due to
lost VCR data (cause this is also how it fast forwards to a
specific
file on the tape) but it can/does also sequentially track
through the
files...
Where exactly in the manual... ? that was long ago (and as I
put
it... I haven't slept since then)
later,
Dwight

What is a VCR and what or where is the Messages Manual, it didn't
come with
the documentation
that came with ADSM.
I am also experiencing excessive requests for tape cleaning. I have
turned
it off on the Magstar
and allowing ADSM to perform the cleaning function. Everyday there
is a
least one request to clean the tape drive
and I also get write errors on at least two tapes on a daily basis.
The
majority of our tapes are only 3 months old.
