ADSM-L

Linda,

I can't say (and I dont' dare to do so) that there is a definite problem with
using 3570 tapes in "scratch mode". But as I mentioned below: that was one of
our actions and it improved the situation (combined with all the other steps).
We always found our tapes dead during reclamation (where tape go from used to
scratch and vice versa).

Defining all tapes as volumes (which go to empty instead of scratch) has an
additional advantage: ADSM can keep track of all mounts, errors etc. which are
lost if the tape goes scratch - so "q vol f=d" always ha the complete history of
the tape.

So it's not a general recommendation but in our case it seemed to improve the
situation.

BTW: if you go through the current thread and the archives you have a lot of
statements like "struggling with 3570 tapes, CE is replacing parts, CE is
updating the firmware etc." - it seems like this is a very common problem in the
3570 arena.

Mit freundlichem Gruss/Best Regards

I are also experience problem with our Magstar 3575 tapes C- format. I have
update the firmware to the latest and the IBM CE is slowly replacing parts.

Michael, why do you add the volumes to the storage pool and not use scratch
tapes? Is the a problem with the way ADSM handles the magstar tapes when
used as scratch?

FYI - Server is ADSM for AIX ver 3.1.1.5 running on AIX 4.2.1.
