My experience with 3590s in a 3494 is that ADSM does well with drive
problems. As seen in a SHOW LIBR, it knows when a drive or the library
as a whole has gone bad, and will avoid using any device which is in a
bad state. Beyond that, it's up to ye olde operator to deal with
tapes that the robot cannot (stuck in drive, broken, dropped, etc.).
