We've had all sorts of unicode problems, although not this particular one.

A few weeks ago one of our clients crashed repeatedly with assertion
failures linked to dmem.c . No error messages in dsmerror.log and nothing in
the sched.log.
We only found the offending files by backing up every top level directory
individually ... waiting for the failure to appear and then traversing the
directory structure and repeating the exercise. Like you we tried unicode no
and yes. IBM were unable to recreate the scenario.

For me the bottom line is that IBM has to make the ADSM Client fully unicode
compliant otherwise we'll continue to run into these problems.

We have experienced some Desktop directories being created with a 10
character name that is translated as ????????? by adsm client (3.1.0.5 and
3.1.0.6).
It shows up as 10 vertical bars in NT Explorer, with a short name
like "9306~1".

The adsm client burps on these, and the incremental backup quits.
Deleting the directory allows the backup (after starting from scratch) to
run until it hits another.

Anyone seeing this? ADSM Support is still working on it.
ps. We have tried useunicode yes/no to no avail.
pps. server is aix 4.2.1, 3.1.2.15
