What is IBMtape driver version that u are using . Also note down whether u are 
able to probe the devices through probe-scsi

Do you see the drives when you run 'probe scsi ' ? Try to reboot your system
with -r.
If it doesn't help, make sure your mt.conf file is correct .Check if your
lb.conf work well.
Also - check the st.conf file under the kernel directory, to avoid conflicts.
