We (I) are in the process of rolling out ADSM backups for our AFS Cell.
The biggest problems I have encountered deal mainly with performance (tx
rates, etc), but I am also sorely puzzled why IBM, who owns Transarc,
hasn't developed a more user-friendly backup-by-volume client. We had
considered using the back-by-file client, and found that it was simply too
slow, and too cumbersome to keep track of the 6 thousand+
virtualmountpoints we have.
I'm not sure that my gripes really follow your thread, but I can certainly
say that I would have more seriously considered other vendors had I known
what a kludge would be required to get it to work.
On the other hand... I don't know if any other package would be much
better.
Just my $0.02
