ADSM'ers,
We run ADSM Server on MVS 5.2 with TCP/IP 3.2 and an isolated storage
network comprised of 2 Bay Switches, 1 CISCO Router, 100mb Ethernet, ATM and
Escon. We are in the implementation phase of providing backup/recovery
services to LAN and Open Servers. Recently, we had our first larger backup of a
Windows NT server that is approximately 30GB. With this first large backup,
we've observed a few things:

1) During the backup, TCP/IP on the mainframe can consume up to 76MIPS while
ADSM remains under 5 or so. On this LPAR, ADSM is the only consumer of TCP/IP
services. I've looked at MICS and the timings indicate the surge in MIPS has
to be ADSM.

2) Does anyone use ADSM & IBM VTS's? We do and haven't evaluated the impact,
yet. If anyone had a clue about possible repurcussions, I'd be eternally
grateful.

3) Has anyone performed any benchmarking using this general configuration? If
so, what tests did you run? What did you experience? We are in the process
of building a Windows NT server with about 352GB of DASD just to perform
benchmark tests. We are experiencing a lot of reluctance from our LAN Server
owners in converting to ADSM. (They use DLT drives & Seagate Backup Exec.) As
a result of this hesitancy, we have felt it necessary to perform extensive
performance related tests. But, if any of you had a test script already built,
it sure would save time.....

Thanks,
     Lisa
