Bob,

If you are not doing so already, make sure you specify
"Erase existing data" on the restore.
This will make sure old log files are deleted.

Another recommendation is to take a look at the
Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.  They contain
some tips/hints on restoring...
Also, Microsoft doesn't put Service Packs out
for Exchange 4.0 anymore...so their may be
some HOTFIXes that you need to apply.
