Does anyone know if there is a formal requirement submitted to IBM for
a native HSM solution for Windows NT 4.0? If so I'd like to add my name to
the list. From what I've heard from various sources, it appears IBM is
waiting for Microsoft Windows 2000(NT 5.0) since it will have some kind of
API's for use by third party HSM products.

I think it is a serious mistake for IBM to wait for Windows 2000 since
NT 4.0 is probably going to be around for a while. I think many clients
will wait for the initial bugs to be worked out of the initial Windows 2000
GA release before installing it. I am constantly reminded, by our "always
looking for a reason not to use ADSM" NT support staff, that Seagate and
Arcserve offer HSM on NT . Using the Seagate HSM option with ADSM is also
not a great solution since it requires additional hardware. If a formal
request for native Windows NT 4.0 HSM has not been submitted to IBM then I
will submit one. I will publish the number on this forum for those who
would like to add their names to the list. As an ADSM user who really
likes the product, it is frustrating to see IBM constantly promoting HSM
being one of it's ADSM's capabilities when it's not available for Netware
or Windows NT. How can IBM advertise it's goal to be the premiere storage
management product for Windows NT and not offer NT 4.0 customers a native
HSM solution.
