Don,

Check out chapter 5 in the ADSM Administrators Guide - Managing a Full
Library.

Beyond what it states in the manual, if you've taken the default of 0 for
maxscratch instead of setting maxscratch to the number of tapes in your
library, ADSM will ask for the mount of a new scratch volume after running
out of free tapes in your library. This will come in the form of a request,
so you'll want to have a mount request window running when that happens
(dsmadmc -mount). If you do see the request, export an existing volume and
import a new volume. The new volume must be pre-labled for ADSM.

If you have maxscratch set to the number of tapes in the library, you will
eventually receive a Server out of data storage space during a backup when
ADSM can't find enough free space.

You want to stay ahead of the backups by ensuring that there is enough free
space for backups each day.

Check the used percentages on your existing tapes and the reclamation
thresholds to see if you can reclaim tapes that are in the library now.

And budget for a new tape library next year.

Subject: Question concerning full tape storage.

We have been running ADSM for nearly 8 months now and things have been
running very well. We recently changed some of the copy group parameters so
that we retain more objects longer and our tape storage is nearing capacity.
We are writing only to tape and we have never had to change a tape out of
our 3570. So my question is this; when ADSM finally fills up that last tape,
what will it do? Do I just define some tapes to the tape library and ADSM
will ask for them? I kind of confused on this point and hoping that someone
can give me some insight.

    Thanks in advance!
