Maria Jose, you can use ADSM in a Banyan environment by having a Banyan client
with authority to all the data on the Banyan server be the ADSM client. For
example if a Win95 Banyan client has access to all the data, run the ADSM
client on this machine and back up the remote drives (that is, the data on the
server). If you need to restore files, use this client to put the data back on
the remote drives. As for the Banyan setup on the Banyan server itself, use the
DRM disk/dump restore periodically dump the Banyan server boot drive to ADSM.
The ADSM DRM disk/dump can also be used to back up the Banyan server in its
entirety. Depending on the size of the Banyan server and the hours of service,
the disk/dump restore may be the best way of using ADSM on the Banyan server.

Another point: Many ADSM installations like their end-users to be
self-sufficient and be able to back up and restore their own files. If this is
the case in your Banyan environment, install ADSM clients on all Banyan clients
and and have end-users back up their local and remote drives. As for licensing
and costs, remember that the Network Storage Manager has unlimited client
licenses. This scenario lends even more credence to the disk/dump restore
client as viable Banyan server backup vehicle.

As for APIs on Banyan, there was a flurry of requests to Banyan about 4 years
ago, where ADSM users requested Banyan to supply APIs to their file system,
analogous to what Novell did with Netware. To my knowledge, Banyan did not
react to these requests. So, we do not have an ADSM backup/archive client. The
ADSM DRM disk/dump restore client is independent of the file system and
operating system and therefore will work on the Banyan server.

Subject: Banyan and ADSM

I've seen two notes where two people asked about Banyan networks and ADSM.
However, nobody seems to reply them. I'am also interested on it because I have
a customer who wants to manage his Banyan network, with ADSM or a software able
to do the backups. Does anybody have any experience on it?.

Is it possible for Banyan to use the ADSM API Client?. How would you do it?.

  Thank you very much,
                                                          Mariajo.
