nope. i must have got a corrupted database then. :) i did a point-in-time
restore and that ironed it out.

but nobody has pointed it out to me if this is the case. as the following
message in my original mail:

** ANR9999D dballoc.c(802): Sequence number mismatch for SMP page addr
**      417792; HeaderSmpNum = -1, Expected = 408.
** ANR0361E Database initialization failed: error initializing database
**      page allocator.
