Shane,

Unfortunately the 2 issues that you describe are not related to each other.
LOST or MISSING VCR messages occur when the device is not closed properly
after a write operation. This is a known microcode issue and you should
call hardware support to get the most current microcode sent to you. As for
volumes that already have this problem simply use the MOVE DATA command to
move the contents to a new volume/storage pool. The tape may then be reused
and the VCR data gets reqritten with each new "initial use".

As for the sense bytes, ASC=29 ASCQ=00 indicates a scsi bus reset. 99.5% of
the time this is a HW related problem (bad adapter, calbe, terminator,
drive, etc.). The drives could be causing an adapter problem which in turn
causes a vus reset, or a problematic adapter could be causing the bus reset
that causes the drive errors. Again, hardware support is going to be the
key to determining what is causing the scsi bus resets. If you check your
NT event log you may see additional errors that would be useful to the HW
folks.

although I checked the error codes, it appears these codes are not in the
documentation. I think we got a problem with either the 3570-B12 unit or
the Adaptec AHA-2944UW differential SCSI card that is in the IBM PC server
that runs ADSM server. But I'd like a more detailed explanation. This unit
is giving me a stack of write errors - then when it gets an error it
switches the tape to read-only - we run out of tapes, backups fail, no DBB
tapes are generated, and everyone gets all upset and managers begin to ask
difficult questions. We also get about three to four lost VCR errors per
week, which fouls my mood considerably 'cos I thought things should be a
little more reliable than what they are. I hope it all ties into the SCSI
errors I am getting, but I'd like to know if anyone else gets this type of
problem. IBM, I know you are listening in, please tell me what the below
errors mean.. please. :)
