Alex,
there's a product within ADSM that addresses Bare Metal Disaster Recovery:
Disaster Recovery Manager.

Using a special boot disk, a mini OS/2 gets installed on a ramdisk. Using
this system that does not use any harddisk ressources, one can transfer a
disk image from the client (Intel server) to the ADSM server and vice versa.

Major disadvantage of this product is, that you have to reboot the machine
in order to create the disk image in ADSM. In addition this process must be
carried out locally and manually right in front of the machine.
In case of disaster recovery the process sounds as simple as with other
common products.

There are other possibilities to provide media within ADSM for disaster
recovery:
Seagate Backup Exec and Cheyenne ARCserve have an ADSM Option available. I
don't know right now if the disaster reecovery options do work together with
the ADSM options in both cases but it sounds optimistic.
You can use tools like Partition Image to create an image of your system
partition on another server. Then you can either archive this image into
your ADSM server or burn the image onto a CD-R for local disaster recovery
using a CDROM drive.
Out of an alliance between ADSM and Stac Replica Stac are to develop an
ADSM option for their product. Starting in 1st quarter of 1999 Replica
should be able to access the ADSM server directly so you then can put a
highly compressed image of your system drive online into the ADSM server and
restore without any local tape drives.

Regards,
Michael
