I have experienced a similar problem with PDFs in my computing labs.  It
seems that PDFs will only print properly if you use PS drivers.  We have dot
matrix draft printers in our labs, which can print graphics, but they are
essentially control code based line printers.  The output from a PDF on
these printers is pathetic - it is similar to the kerning problem mentioned
in the original post - no spaces, characters overlapping, unreadable.  It is
very difficult to get any help from Adobe on the matter.
