Please let me know if this worked. I have found that once the library manager
flags a tape
as Inaccessible it ignores any commands in reference to the tape until you make
a
manual intervention, for our 3495 the robot doesn't even move.
Because of the distance in your case, have you looked into installing DCAF
(more cost effective
if you have several libraries 'can control up to 8') I find the mtlib cmds
limited for problem
determination and need the extra info that you can only get from the library
manager console
to see what is really going on.
If you don't already have it I suggest GA32-0280 Magstar 3494 Tape Library
Operator's Guide.
Note the remote console "DCAF" should also let you ran an inventory remotely.

I can give you a six word formula for success
Think it through - follow through.

Have you tried changing the category of the volume?

For example, if you wanted to eject the tape, you would issue the
AIX command:

 'mtlib -l /dev/lmcp1 -C -t FF10 -VAAD977'

Of course, what you'd *want* to change it to is the private
category of your ADSM server. You can easily check to see what
that value is by querying the extended volume data on a known
storage pool volume, e.g. 'mtlib -l /dev/lmcp1 -qE -v -VAAD978'
