The files in the Profiles directory are not part of the NT registry.
The NT Registry is located in the %SystemRoot%\system32\config dir and must
(!!) be EXCLUDED during a backup. The backup of these 'open' files will be done
from ADSM via a backup API of NT.

If there are locally logged on users (or service accounts, e.g. Exchange) then
additional files are locked from NT, in this case your
C:\WINNT\Profiles\SMSEXEC\NTUSER.DAT (part of a SMS service account). But these
'open' files will be backed up via the API as well, BUT you cannot exclude this
directory, because only parts of this directory will be backup. You will get
for every backup the 'Access denied' message within ADSM for these files, but
this doesn't matter.

You can restore in any case the whole registry and the user profiles, even if
it seems that some files are missing.

The procedure is described in the following redbooks:
SG24-4880-00 and SG24-2231-00 (Windows NT Backup and Recovery with ADSM)

Subject: NT User Registrey backup and resrore

We are having problems with our bare metal restore tests: everything
seems to work except for the User part of the Registry on our NT
systems.

The level of Windows is NT 4.0 SP 3
The server is ADSM for NT 3.1.1.1
The ADSM NT client is 3.1.0.3

We typically run several services on our NT machines under accounts
other than SYSTEM and the files containing the User Registry for these
accounts (e.g., C:\WINNT\Profiles\SMSEXEC\NTUSER.DAT and NTUSER.DAT.LOG)
are not backed up because they are in use. So they cannot be restored
are not backed up because they are in use. So they cannot be restored
and are lost in the case of a bare metal restore. The Registry Backup
is running and saves what it says it should (we run Incremental backups
as a scheduled service under SYSTEM.)

How can we back up these parts of the User Registry and restore them as
needed?

TIA

Allan.
