Hi Johan,
Yes, I was curious about your use of "ADMIN" as an ID...
The API is a backup/archive API only. It does not allow
you to act as an Admin, so I don't think you'll be able
to do what you want.
Sorry about the virtualnodename suggestion; you didn't
mention your platform, but my response was geared more
towards a UNIX platform, where this is a valid option.
You're right, thought, it isn't for non-UNIX platforms.

Subject: Re: API calls
Andy,
Thanks for your response.
I am using ADSM version 3.1 for Windows NT and my client is a Windows 95 client.
I am trying to use Visual Basic 5.0 to connect to ADSM, what isn't working at
this time.
I can connect to the ADSM server, but only by using for my nodename a
registered servername.
Waht i want is to simulate a ADSM Administrative client session. And that is
e.g. a session with username ADMIN and password ADMIN (if i keep my default
password).
And i can't get it working.
Comment to your suggestions:
virtualnodename isn't a valid line for the DSM.OPT file
Hopefully you can give me more hints to solve this problem.

Subject: Re: API calls
Hello,
What does your call to dsmInit look like? Is this a UNIX system and if so, is
passwordaccess set to generate? If the answer is "yes", then you need to set up
a new stanza in dsm.sys that has "nodename admin" in it. Then you can pass
"-servername=stanzaname" to dsmInit via the 8th argument, which is for options.
You'll need to initialize the encrypted password first using the regular
backup-archive client (i.e. run "dsmc query filespace -servername=stanzaname",
and enter the password when prompted).
Alternatively, if you want "admin" to be a virtual root user, you can pass
"-virtualnodename=admin". You will also have to pass "admin" as the password.
However this is a little less secure, so the first option I mentioned is what I
recommend.

Subject: API calls
Hi,
Is there anyone who can help me with my dsmInit API call.
The question is, if there is a way to connect to the ADSM Server by using API's
with nodename ADMIN and password ADMIN.
It seems that i always have to connect to the server using the nodenname of the
server, and that is very strange. I only want to open a session using API's
with name ADMIN and password ADMIN.
Hopefully someone can help me...
