We are getting a number of the following messages each day:

07/21/1998 02:22:01 ANR0534W Transaction failed for session 353
for node PDLEWI01 (WinNT) - size estimate exceeded and server
is unable to obtain additional space in storage pool IT-WS-BACK-DASD.

The message manual suggests we either have to turn off cache
at the server or compression at the client, neither of which is
an attractive solution. Is there a fix that would force the
server to go ahead and free up more space and then retry the file?

No.

I opened APAR PQ12677 on this 'feature' and it was 'CLOSED SUG'
in early June, with the following comments from IBM:

LOCAL FIX:
Set COMPRESSALWAYS NO on the client,

   OR

Turn off caching in the disk storage pool, then use the MOVE
DATA command on each disk storage pool volume to free up
existing cached files.

COMMENTS:
If the size estimate provided by the client is too low,
the server does attempt to acquire additional space so the
file can be stored. However, the server is currently unable
to free additional space occupied by cached files. A design
change would be required to provide this capability. ADSM
Server Development will examine the feasibility of making
such a change and will also consider possible alternative
approaches.
