To further echo John's comments - using a Win95 client (or any other client
except the NetWare client) is not a good idea. There are a couple of
reasons. First, you are seeing the first one - it is slow. You are doing
double I/O - first the data has to be brought to the server, translated for
your WIndows client, and then sent to the Win95 machine. Once there, Win95
has to give ADSM the data, and then ADSM sends it to your server. This
amounts to double I/O, and lots of overhead. Running on the NetWare client
eliminates the additional I/O, and also removes all of the translation
overhead (you still have some compression, but that is there anyway).

Secondly, when you do the backup through an intermediary client, you are NOT
backing up the Registry or NDS tree, and you get no user rights backed up.
So you cannot do a full restore of the server, and you cannot restore any
permissions associated with any individual file.

It really is worth the extra setup time needed to install the NetWare client.

We are using the Windows GUI ADSM (IBM\ADSM\baclient\dsm.exe) to backup a Novell
Network onto an AS400 3570 drive. We have 7 volumes of various sizes on our
Novell Server. We started a complete backup on Monday. After 3 hours we only
had about 1.52 gb backed up and the server quit. The next day we chose all
volumes but vol 7 and started a backup again. After about 7 hours we only had
about 4.0 gb backed up. Is this a typical time scenario for doing a complete
backup? Every night we do an AS400 backup onto the 3570 drive. Is it possible
to do the AS400 backup and an ADSM backup as automatic unattended? We are
accessing the ADSM server via a Windows95 ADSM client which then can access the
Novell Drives. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
