We have seen a problem which may be related to an Exchange Directory
restore from an ADSM backup.

On a test Exchange 5.5 system a restore of the Information Store from an
online ADSM backup was done successfully with no apparent problems
resulting.  The next day a restore of the Directory was done from an
online ADSM backup and appeared to be correct.  However the next
scheduled generation of the Offline Address book resulted in error event
ID 5004 on the Application Event Log:

Generation of the offline Address Book is complete. Result: The attempt
to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed.
Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store ID no:
8004011d-0512-00000000

The Offline Address book generation after the restore of the IS but
before the Dir restore was successful.

The only reason we have to suspect the ADSM restore is that it was the
only Exchange activity on that system that day!  No other problems have
been found on that system, other maintenance operations work correctly.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestion?
